Description of the Parks and Recreation Department

The Parks and Recreation Department is responsible for overseeing 16 City Parks, including over 1,000 acres of park space, 12 ball fields, 19 soccer fields, and 14 tennis courts.  The Department is also responsible for the Forestry Division, which maintains Alton's street trees and other dead and dangerous trees on City property and right of way.  The Department hosts a multitude of special events each year.  City employees and volunteers take great pride enriching the lives of each citizen through quality parks and programs.

Parks and Recreation Commission

The Alton Parks and Recreation Department is operated under the direction of the City of Alton and the Alton Park and Recreation Commission.  The Commission is comprised of 5 members appointed by the Mayor with the approval of the City Council.  Members serve 4-year rotating terms.  The Board is responsible for overseeing the Park and Recreation Department, their budget, and program planning.  For more information on the Parks and Recreation Commission, including members and meeting dates, please click here.

Alton Amphitheater Commission

The Alton Amphitheater Commission shall have the authority to supervise the management of the Alton Amphitheater facility and to coordinate the efforts of the various departments of the City of Alton to promote the utilization of the Amphitheater in a manner consistent with the original mission statement defining the purpose of the Amphitheater.  For more information on the Alton Amphitheater Commission, including members and meeting dates, please click here

Pavilion and Picnic Shelter Fees

The Alton Park Department provides various pavilions and picnic shelters for group and corporate outings, parties, receptions, classes, etc.  Reservations are by permits only and must be arranged through the Department.  There is a fee structure for shelter use based on resident 6 hour time slots.  Please call the office for more details!
